Modern Greece in 20th-Century Travel Narratives

“Other countries may offer you discoveries in manners or lore or landscape; Greece offers you something harder—the discovery of yourself.”
Lawrence Durrell, Prospero’s Cell

Course Description

This course will explore Greece’s cultural identity and history in the 20th century through selected writings of British and American travel writers.

As Robert Eisner points out, the concept of journey is inextricably linked to Greece and its identity and history. Odysseus, the quintessential traveler, and the Odyssey the paradigmatic travel book, have inspired numerous modern Greek odysseys.  One question the course will address is why Greece has inspired such a plethora of travel literature than perhaps any other country.

Work in this class will include experiencing the journey (travel to Greece), and reading and writing about both the literature and experiences as a traveler of Greece.
